St. Nicholas with Saints Lucy and Charles Borromeo
Location: Church of St. Peter Martyr, Murano, Italy
Provenance: Church of St. Blaise, Venice, Italy
St. Nicholas is identified by the three gold balls lying on the dais before him. The artist has given him a mitre despite the story of his having been deprived of it by the Council of Nicea.
Below on the left St. Charles Borromeo is pictured as usual with a white surplice and the red mantle of cardinals. To his right St. Lucy holds her attribute, a plate with two eyes on it.
The figures in the arch are of course Mary with her blue mantle and the Christ Child, nearly naked as is usual in such representations in this period.
The two iron combs below Nicholas's feet do not figure in Lucy's passion, nor in the lives of Charles and Nicholas, who were not tortured or martyred. But they are traditional attributes of St. Blaise, for whose church this image was painted.
The signature JACOPO PALMA is "etched" onto the stone piece between Charles and Lucy.
